1. Do not smoke in bed or allow anyone in your household to smoke in bed. Cigarettes are a major source of fires.

2. Store all flammable liquids in a secure, UL (United Laboratories) approved container and in a well ventilated area; do not store gasoline in a flimsy container or in a closet or some other enclosed area.

3. If using gasoline or other flammable liquids, watch out for their vapors. Not only do they damage the lungs, eyes and nose at times, but the vapors can explode with or without a flame; have plenty of ventilation when using such liquids.

4. Keep your dwelling free of clutter, trash piles and other accumulated items (such as old news papers, paper bags, etc); good housekeeping is a very good way to reduce the risk of fire and spreading fire.

5. Remember that piles of trash, newspapers and other debris make it difficult to escape from a fire.

6. Make sure your electrical system is in good working condition; do not overload your circuits ... If you have more appliances and other electrical items that your present system can handle, increase the amps in your electrical system. A good way to tell if you have too much on one circuit is if the fuse or curcuit breaker continually shuts off the electrical power to your appliances or other electrical appliances.

7. Do not put many plugs into one outlet; this overloads the outlet (which can cause a fire.)

8. Explaine (and run a test drill) for everyone in your home, apartment etc; teach how to prevent, escape and put out a fire if one is started.

9. Ask your fire department to inspect your property to check for fire hazards.

10. Report any fire hazards that exist in your neighborhood to your local fire department.

11. Use the "Tot Finders" which are red and silver decals (which glow in smoke or darkness) and attach one to any window in your home or apartment; this signals a fire person, arriving at a fire, to go immediatelt to that room to make certain everyone is out of the structure.

12. Watch vacant homes and structures; they are the favorite targets of an arsonist. Report to the police anyone seen lurking inside or outside the structure.

13. Report to City Hall (and insist on action by the city, or preferably the property owner) on any piles of trash and debris in the neighborhood which can be entered by somone. These are an arsonist favorite points to "set" fires. Trash piles, dumbing of trash and allowing unoccupied structures to exist are not only eyesores, they are fire and safety hazards as well as health problems.

14. Remember the description (or name and address) of anyone seen lurking with fire torches or such things that can "set" a fire.

15. Be aware that false fire alarms are illegal, a danger to everyone and to the fire department answering the call. This could take away a fire department vehicles from a real fire somewhere else; these are not exciting pranks ... there are real dangers.

16. Remember that protecting the arsonist or person giving false fire alarms is protecting someone who is clear and present danger to your life and personal safety. It is not a childish prank. It kills and injures people, burns homes, destroy's buildings, forces many to move and deteriorates the neighborhood. It must be stopped and reported to the police. Be willing to be interviewed by the police or the fire department if necessary. Be willing to testify about what you know.

17. Do not pile rubbish and trash next to the home or next to a building wall; when lit, this will also ignite the building; trash piles are the major source of fire by arson.

18. Keep cellar windows closed and locked; if an arsonist is at work, he or she could throw a lit torch into the basement and, if it ignites anything there can start a fire.

19. Keep garage doors, back entranceways, alleyway entrances and yard gates closed and locked; most arsonist are looking for fast ways to get into an area to throw a torch. Fences with locked gates are a good way to protect an apartment or house.
